2 – If you live in a non-Muslim country, but one that recognizes Islam

Some non-Muslim countries have a significant Muslim population.

This includes, for example, countries as diverse as India, South Africa and Thailand. In most of these cases, but not all, the countries have specific laws in place for Islamic marriage or have provided for legal recognition of Islamic marriages.

3 – If you live in a non-Muslim country

In the vast majority of cases, Islamic religious marriage alone has little to no civil legal effect and the countries’ authorities therefore do not consider the couple married.
